Learn More About Marble Worktops

What is marble and what styles are available?

Marble is a natural quarried stone formed from limestone subjected to high pressure and temperatures over millions of years. This crystallisation process results in a dense and aesthetically pleasing material featuring unique veined or swirling patterns. Primarily made up of calcium carbonate, marble boasts a smooth texture and brilliant shine when polished.

The stone’s veining and colour patterns vary significantly from slab to slab, making each marble effect truly one-of-a-kind. The most common colour combination is white with grey veining, including well-known Italian Carrara and Arabescato marbles. Meanwhile, Calacatta is another best-selling white-based marble with strong veining and broader colour variations.

On top of that, you’ll also find warmer beige and brown tones like Breccia Sarda. As well as dramatic black hues with white veins such as Grigio Carnico, and vivid hues like Guatemala Green. Plus red, orange and blue tones, all depending on the mineral deposits within.

We fabricate bespoke marble surfaces for many uses, but here are some popular applications

  • Kitchen worktops, islands and breakfast bars
  • Bathroom vanity countertops
  • Splashbacks for kitchen or bathroom sinks
  • Luxury shower areas and bath surrounds
  • Feature wall cladding
  • Hearths and fire surrounds

Marble is strong and dense, but it is softer and slightly more delicate than granite or quartz. Because of this, marble is more prone to chips and scratches if heavy or sharp objects come into direct contact with it. However, marble worktops stand up to typical daily wear and tear well if they’re well maintained. Most importantly, the surface should be sealed twice a year to prevent staining. If you like the look of marble, but are put off by having to seal it, modern quartz and porcelain alternatives are now highly realistic.

For daily cleaning, we recommend wiping your marble countertop down with a soft damp cloth and ensure spills are wiped up quickly. You can use mild washing up liquid diluted in warm water or a pH-neutral stone cleaner to clean marble, but do not use harsh chemicals or cleaning pads. Rinse away soap residue with a soft damp cloth when you’re done and don’t forget to dry the surface with a soft clean towel. If left to air dry, the marble may appear dull later.

The key is to avoid harsh cleaning products like vinegar or ammonia that could damage the finish. Just mop up spills as quickly as you can, then try one of the above methods. Likewise, avoid abrasive scourers as these may leave scratches or even strip some of the sealant.

Although marble offers a good degree on heat resistance, it is susceptible to cracking through thermal shock. For this reason, it is recommended that hot pans and countertop cooking appliances such as slow cookers and air fryers should be sat on insulated surface protectors or raised trivets.

Love the look of marble but put off by the upkeep that marble countertops and splashbacks require? Then you’re in luck! There are now several alternatives available, including ceramic options such as Dekton and manmade quartz. These authentic marble effect surfaces mimic natural veining patterns and come in numerous colours, but are specially engineered to be non-porous and scratch resistant for ease. And whilst they can’t entirely replicate marble’s unique nature and high end feel, they are ideal for busy family kitchens and bathrooms!

Whilst these two materials share similar mineral content, they are not the same material. Marble is a metamorphic rock created from limestone that has been put under immense heat and pressure beneath the Earth. This results in crystallisation and any impurities like iron oxides or mica can impact its colours and patterns. Onyx is also made up of mostly calcite. However, this sedimentary rock forms in layers as stalactites and stalagmites within caves.
